A few drums I made over last year
« on: February 03, 2011, 12:57:26 am »
Here's a link to a few drums I made last year! Paleoplanet used my eagle drum as the top banner under the musical forum which is really cool and exciting!

Very nice 8).  A build along would be nice. ;)  Any particulars, on number, and the spacing of the lacing's?

The fellow who taught me did the spacings in increments on four only, this is based on the Medicine Wheel which is a hoop divided into 4 equal spaces. Each one represents a direction, a season, animals, your horoscope,.....Everything! This is Native American belief, and since he was my teacher I did it his way. As for spacing I would simply fold the soaked rawhide and mark on creases to find uniform distance between the holes the lace are in.

Thanks for all your kind words! I'm also gonna try to  post a few rawhide rattles I make with the trim I have left from drums. That would be a cool buildalong to.

I used elk mainly. In the past when I was learning I used bison, deer, horse and moose. I would love to get some more moose rawhide, the thicker hides have a lower tone and moose sounds like thunder. Antelope would be cool to.

MedicineWheel I will keep you and everyone else posted on a buildalong  :) I just need some rawhide. If anyone wants to spare a hide I'll make them a little drum for free!

Excellent idea Medicine wheel ! ;)  Autumnbear, You better, get some room squared away, with an offer like that, I think you are about to inundated with rawhide ! ;D  If, I had some, I would surely send it your way.

:) I'll make room if I don't have any! Making drums is a lot of fun, it can kick your backside to. A lot like making a bow.
