Every book I read refers to the cross section, but none explain what it is. What is it?

the cross section of a hot dog is a circle, that is if you cut a hot dog and look at the end, you see a circle
the cross section of a bow is often rectangular, with the sides of the rectangle being the back, belly, and sides
