Book Resources

I though a single thread discussing books would be a good idea.  If someone has a good book they would recommend on any subject (i.e. bow making, knife making, cooking, gardening, leather working, etc), they could list it and why they like it.   So who's reading what?  I'll list a few

Leather working-

"Lacing & Stitching for Leathercraft- 10 differing lacing and stitching techniques."  This book shows you how to do the basics, it is easy to understand, and will help add some nice finishing touches on projects.

"Leathercraft Tools by Al Stohlman- For the beginner (me) it shows the different tool options, how to use them, and how to sharpen them.

Book on trees-

National Wildlife Federation- Field Guide to Trees of North America-  One of the best books on identifying trees I've seen.  It has colored pictures of the bark, leaves, and general region of the trees.  Organized by leaf type to help you narrow down your search.

Mushrooms

"The New Guide to Mushrooms" by Peter Jordan.  Great pictures and shows dangerous lookalikes....a lot of good information.

Knifemaking-

Blades Guide to making knives by Joe Kertzman-

Custom Knifemaking by Tim McCreight- has 10 really neat projects in it and does a good job at explaining them

$50 Knife Shop,  by Wayne Goddard  It is a big help to a starting knife maker.

Bows & Arrows of the Native Americans, by Jim Hamm.  Very good book with lots of info.

The Traditional Bowhunters Handbook, by T. J Conrads.  Every Bowhunter should have this.

Flintknapping Making & Understanding Stone Tools, by John C. Whittaker.  It has loads of good info.

Tanning-

Deerskins into buckskins. I haven't braintanned, but read the book and is very detailed.

The Complete Book of Tanning Skins and Furs by James Churchill- details several different tanning methods of hair on and hair off of for many different species. The best tanning book out there if you want to try different methods!

Sharpening

The Complete Guide to Sharpening by Leonard Lee-  if it needs sharpened, this book will show you how. Axes, drawknifes, plane blades, scrapers, saws, etc.  Great book to own if you use any hand tools.

bushcraft -mors kochanski. the guy who wrote this book actually lives the life in the tundra areas. the sections on fire, knives and axes is incredible

Old Tools-New Eyes:  A Primal Primer of Flintknapping, by Bob Patten

Mystic Warriors of the Plains by Thomas Mails. THE book on plains indigenous folks. Over 800 pages and lots and lots of drawings. Several chapters on weapons.

Longbow-A social and Military History. author -Robert Hardy. great book, from the finding the Mary Rose to gathering yew from around the world.
