Holly, european
« on: December 14, 2010, 05:59:45 am »
Hi,
my name is Rolf, I'm from Germany and I build bows for 6 years.

If errors occur, I ask to be lenient because I use a translation program
work.

I started with arcs of Sambucus nigra, Robinia pseudoacacia, Ulmus and Quercus rubra.
I've always been interested in unusual woods, I have narrow long arches of black palm with Hickorybacking and Massaranduba with bamboo backing.

Massaranduba with Hickory - it can build almost any bow design, and with very narrow tips (3 mm = 0.12 inch), they are also very fast - no hand shock.

When I build incentives from the wood mostly to the last.
My fastest is a primitive bow of Quercus rubra, which at a length of 60.25 inches and 45 lbs throws a 450gn arrow at 184 fps.

But today I will show an arc of me is ready to become recently.

Wood is European holly, or Ilex.
Length 68.9 inches, 45 lbs
The bark is an excellent educational purposes, so I have not removed them.
The diameter at the handle is 1.6 inches, 0.3 inches on the cams.
The wood is very hard, so he brings that only 150 fps at 10gpp.
The bow weighs 1.5 pounds

Guys I've seen this bow in real a little while back; let me asure you in real it's even more impressive!!!
Welcome Rolf!

Beautiful and very unique bow, Rolf.  8)  I have thought many times about building such a bow but never had the "cajones" to do so.  ;D I will now!!!  I never expected holly(Ilex) to make a good bow. I have made arrows from a few species with good results.

Awesome Rolf,  Welcome to PA and thanks for sharing, I love the bow, It's great to see different types of wood then the normal wood, and especially with such character. The tiller looks great. Very nicely done.

That's really cool. I've never seen anything like that. I'd love to see some of your other work. Especially the one shooting 184 at 10gpp. That's an amazing feat.
