I've been reading a few posts regarding this. I live in southern NY state. We have lots of "wild' grade vines climbing up our trees. Are these considered vine maple?

No Vine maple tends to grow in clusters and is a true tree. Not a vine. It is called vine maple because it is one of the smaller maples and the main trunk is smaller and often snaky like a vine. They have very small maple leaves. Not sure what you have but I would suspect it is a wisteria of some sort

Vine maple(Acer circinatum) is a true maple tree that is native to an area from British Columbia down to Northern California.

Makes a heck of a bow, working on one right now. If you need some, get in touch with Brian Melton, he has a bunch and it is good, too.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?

You won't find any vine maple in NY unless someone is using it as an ornamental.
I'm still here John
