Stone tool bow carving
« on: September 10, 2010, 02:00:56 pm »
Monday the 6th I was off work.
So, A project that I have been wanting to do for some time was started.
A Stone tool carved Hop Hornbean "sapling" bow is now in the works.

Stone tools carve green wood quite well.  Better than I expected.

The bow will be about 68" long, bend through the handle, flat belly, D bow.
Hoping to have it pull 50# at 27".

Never worked HHB or green wood.  The bow is at 4" floor tiller now.  It will get much stiffer as it drys.
I need to carve off all I can while it is green.

Two Questions have popped up.

Question # 1:  How much wood will I need to get the bow described above???  About how wide and thick the center and tips need to be are my biggest concerns.

Question # 2:  What can I use as primitive sand paper???

Thanks
David

Ridgerunner,
Can tell ya about a stone age type sander, works about as good as a belt sander. Get me on a PM, or call me however ya want to do it. Cant put pictures on PM's but could throw one together and take a pict if ya'd like, and send it to ya via email. Checked my profile and they dont show my TX number? but it is (231) 587-8542. Glad to help if I can.
Sorry I cant say about Hornbeam dimensions.
