Making cheap clamps
« on: April 11, 2010, 01:25:31 pm »
I've gotten away from making bows for awhile. Spending time making a glued lapstrake boat. I  learned, though, how to make cheap clamps for less than a $.75 apiece out of 2x2 stock. I'll keep these around next time I make a laminate bow.

Good looking bow(t) ::)  and nice clamp design.  I make my own spool clamps for lutherie, but hadn't seen that clamp before.

I've seen those before! There was a time when I planned on a lapstrake boat, but the project never got off the ground. The clamps I made were from yellow birch.

What boat you building there Oldbow???

This will be a 15' recreational rowboat with glued lapstrake construction. I will finish planking this week. :)

Hi All,  I made similar clamps ( also for boat building project) and they work dandy.   Stapling, or gluing a leather hinge across the end makes them a little easier to use, but then yiou can't open them real wide nad use the spacer as in Oldboat's drawing.   Ron

wow, i'm bookmarking this so I can steal the design for those clamps.

The boat looks awesome as well, I would like to see more pics as it comes along.
