So I got bitten by the archery bug...
« on: February 21, 2010, 12:57:45 pm »
Hello all.  I'm Steve in Ireland.

Back in about September '09 I found a place about half an hour form me that does indoor shooting (BB guns and archery) and I visited a few times, more interested in the archery that the BB shooting.  I would use his 45# bow and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience.  Shortly after that, I began looking online for "archery related things" and happened upon a site of tutorials on how to make different bows by a guy in America.  I must've spent weeks just staring at my screen, taking in as much info as I could about bow building and Flemish string making among other things.  I decided I had to try to make a bow myself...  it just seemed like the logical next step.  Professionally manufactured bows are perfectly fine and serve a purpose but for me, I just wanted to do everything from the ground up.

Then, after reality set in and I thought "hey...  you don't have the tools, the work-space or the ability to start from scratch...", I found a shop online that's about an hour from where I live so I spent more time drooling over what they had to offer...  In the end, I opted for a pre-glued stave of ipe with a 'boo back for my first project.  I bought this stave, along with some scrapers and Dean Torges' "...osage bow" book on October 31st.

In my quest to find someone with a tillering string that was closer to me than Harry's shop, I was introduced to an Englishman living not ten minutes from where I work.  He's been involved in archery for over fifty years and is a fountain of knowledge and experience.  He helped me to bring a bow out of the stave I bought (while all the time making fun of how someone my size wanted such light bow - I'm 6'2" and a little short of 250 pounds and was looking for a 45# bow.  He's a cantankerous oul' git, is Jim hehehe).  In the end, I scraped off too much or tillered past the ideal weight, compressing the belly too much but the outcome of the bow was about 28# @ 28 inches.  I was more than a little disappointed, to say the least but it's a learning experience and far from over.  Jim rang Ed Scott that night and we discussed the use of sinew on the back for extra poundage.  As the back is bamboo and still has the nodes, I didn't really want to cover it up so we settled at the time for a small laminate over the grip area to add some stiffness.  We glued on a thin block of makori (sp) and I shaped it down to a comfortable shape on the back.  This added about 4# to the draw weight so now it's approximately 31 - 32# @ 28 inches.

As the stave was 72" in length and I never shortened it, I figure there's room to remove a little from each tip to add some more weight.  I'm still not finished at that as I have yet to put a grip on the handle area.  I collect swords also and I've a love of Japanese swords and their craftsmanship so I have some black rayskin which I'm going to glue/lace around the grip area, then will get some leather hilt-wrap from Fred Lohman in the states so I can put a "traditional" style wrap with a twist over the rayskin.  Then I'll make my own string for it and it should be pretty much completed and on to project number two!!!  An osage selfbow.....  I can't wait!

My apologies for rambling on so much, any Mod's feel free to move this post if it doesn't belong in this section of the board...  it started out as a "hello..." thread and ended up a "bow-build" thread...  hehehe

I've also been trying my hand at some curing and tanning of deer skins - some to turn into leather, another to tan with the hair on - interesting work and a lot to learn as I go.

Anyway, that's me I s'pose...  Thought I'd drop a line and say "hi"  *waves* and now I'm gonna go off to trawl through the site for more nice things :)

Thanks,

Steve.

Nice to have you here and I hear your enthusiasm in your words.

Always interesting for me to hear from different countries.  (really is the world wide web)!!  I was wondering if there are hunting seasons there and what can be hunted??

 Again welcome, Lowell

JW... go raibh maith agat :)

Lowell... As with Markinengland, there's no bowhunting in Ireland either :(  Hunting season for deer in Ireland is coming to a close (though it varies from type to type - http://www.citizensinformation.ie/categories/travel-and-recreation/recreational-activities-in-ireland/sport-and-leisure/deer_licences ).  Over here we do field archery though a lot of clubs seem more influenced by target shooting than true field archery...  nice clear lanes, circular targets on the animals, distances marked off etc...

I've joined Lonewolf as it seems to suit my needs/wishes and they have no problem telling the training wheels etc, where to go, when they want to! :)  (nothing wrong with compound...  it just ain't "traditional archery" to me.  Not wanting to step on any toes).

Mullet....  What can I say...  I'm truly sorry for your loss  :'(  Most of my pieces are modern reproductions with the exception of a broadsword I designed and got hand-forged by a smith on the Isle of Skye in Scotland a few years ago and an archer's dagger, made by the same guy just a couple of weeks back.  I'm more interested in the aesthetics than practical use, though.  I respect swords enough to not try learning swordsmanship with a half-assed attitude.  Maybe some day though...

Thanks for the welcome guys :)  I think I'm going to like it here!

Steve.

Howdy Hatch, it is, (and I say this a good bit) "a wonderful addiction". Bettween string building, bow building, arrow making, and what all, it can really hook you in.

Hi HatchA,
You will enjoy your time here. If you can you should put some photos of the bow you made on here. And I would like to see the Archer's dagger you had made too.
Thanks for your time.

Ah that oul' shite!!  hehehe  I never took to it.  I drink Jack and Coke if I'm socialising (rare occasion...) but also love a good Scotch - prefer it to Irish whiskey  :-\  or good red wine.

My dad's a guinness drinker.  Has been all his life.  He always told me "...it's an acquired taste..."  but I like to think that if yiou force yourself to drink something disgusting for long enough, you'll eventually "acquire a taste" for it   ;D  so I just drink what tastes nice  ;)

Question for you, Mullet...  are you named after the fish, or the hairstyle...? :)

***EDIT(***

will do, Cromm

Huh??  Go rabid math addict?  Sorry, I actually don't speak Gaelic.

Anyway, the point, and not just the one at the top of my head, is that I was going to invite you over here to bowhunt deer. if you ever get the chance.  I'm in the Black Hills of South Dakota (think Mount Rushmore) and you can purchase the archery deer license when you get here, crash at my house, and we'll furnish our own meals outa my kitchen.  Budget Bowhunts for Blarney Speakers, that's me.

JW...  What an offer!!  One that I'd dearly love to avail of at some point in the future.  I'll PM you and we can talk more...?

Steve.

***EDIT***

As promised for Cromm, here are a couple of pic's of the "Archer's dagger" that was made for my by Rob Miller in Scotland.  He runs the Castlekeep forge on the Isle of Skye.

HatchA, welcome, and like Eddie ( Mullet ) said, playing with sharp blades half a$$ed is not the way to go.  That being said, as for your Archers' Dagger......SAWEEEEETTT!!!! :o  Now where is the Sword?  He does beautiful work.  I like Guinness, now and then.  Not on the top of my list, but I do occasionally drink it.  However I do like my Tullamore Dew!  I used to drink Jack Daniels, but have moved to Crown Royal.......even if it is owned by the Franks...... ::)  That dagger and sword must have set you back a few bob, quid, shillings, six pence, fifty pee, etc. or whatever denomination that used to be around before the Euro......but it is sure a beautiful piece of craftsmanship.  Again welcome, and like Mullet said, there is a wealth of knowledge, and skills here.  Now to the other addiction on here, you need to get into flint Knapping!  Being as how you have a " Plethora " of flint available to you, you can start making your own arrow heads, and stone knives, etc.  Good luck on your Osage self bow, and don't fight the addiction, it is much better to just give in to it. ;)  Besides, you have a huge support group here. 8)  Take care, and keep us posted on the Ipe bow, and the up coming bow.
