Hickory-Backed Ipe R/D (first attempt)

This is my first attempt at a laminate bow.  Hickory backed Ipe with Ipe and Hickory tip overlays.  Alternating Ipe and Hickory for the handle riser. 50lbs @ 28".  62" NtN.  I think it turned out okay for my first of this design.   This thing is stinkin fast too.   I ran into a few problems with it like the handle riser popping off.   I thought I left the ipe thick enough in the handle area to keep it from bending but I was wrong.  Next one I will put a tapered piece of wood in between the backing strip and ipe.  So I had to dowell it and wrap it to keep the handle on but after 200 or so shots it has held and shows no sign of coming off again.  Thanks for looking.   :)  -josh

I think you did a fantastic job.  A real fine bow.   Sounds like with the experience you already are figuring out what to do next.  Is the handle radiused or is it flat?
A radius in the handle may help to keep it from popping off too, but a flat riser with a "power lam" may still want to pop too.....

Good job for your first glue up. It looks like your bow is doing of it's bending right out of the fades on your full draw picture. It may be just the angle of the picture. Next time try to get a little more bending on the outer half of your limbs. Thanks for sharing.

thanks for the replies guys.

The bow does look like it is bending too much at the fades, but from the midlimb on to the tips is curved out and in the full draw pic it straightens out so I thought it was doing its fair share of the work, but this is my first attempt.  How much should it bend from mid limb then?   It seems that any more than just straight would be bending too much to me.  and yes zen, completely left handed, lol.     :)  -josh

I'm sure that is a fast bow you made there ;). Looks real good too.  The bending might be a tad focused on a short area but I also noticed that it retains good reflex when unstrung so I say great job 8)

Frankly I like that tiller ;D If these bows  bend too much in the outer limbs than they are just sorta fast.. How they shoot, the limb movement, and the set they take is what I base tillering these bows on...

Looks real good Josh, and sometimes these bows really like to bend through the grip because of how they tiller out so they need a bit more mass there to resist it.. ;)

I know you guys know what your doing but it just scares the life out of me seeing that much bend right out of the fades.  I think it would be hard for me to tiller a heavy R/D bow.
