Thoughts?
« on: September 24, 2009, 07:43:32 pm »
Well, I cut this bow for a take down like the one in the build along and in PA. Because of the dished handle and the weight I'm going for, it wouldn't hold, and would just pop out. I put it back together with more two-ton epoxy and two small screws.

I'd like to make a shooting bow from it. I have the feeling that if i tried to wrap it and set it as a one piece, it would eventually break again. So I was thinking trying it like a regular two piece take-down- with metal pieces to reinforce the next epoxy/mesh wrap against the force and corners. The red line would be the cut. I'm not sure though what to do. I don't care whether it's a take down or a one piece, I'd jsut like a heavy, shooting bow!

Help?

You might get away with splicing it the traditional way with a "Z" or fishtail splice.

I would wrap it tight with some heavy musky fishing line like spiderwire and epoxy. I'm pretty sure it would hold just fine.

Kegan, I would cut the riser off like that, glue on a new one piece riser, then use heavy cordage for a handle wrap with 2 or 3 layers of umbrella silk underneath.

You could always put a sleeve on it.There is one in the build along here. :)

The handle is really narrow, so I'd have to use a home made sleeve. You think it might hold?

How narrow is really narrow? Can you show a frontal pic? I would say though, that if you use a sleeve, the recommended epoxy, and keep everything lined up right, it'll all be good when it sets up. You can always glue some wood to the handle, then shape it to fit the sleeve.

It's a whopping 3/4" wide straight from fade to fade.

I'm leaning towards a sleeve take down again. What are your thoughts on striaghtenneing the grip before I do- better than leaving it dished?
