splicing
« on: September 16, 2009, 09:39:15 am »
good morning,

I have a 1" thick x 48" long mahogany board I would like to make into a bow.  My question is can I splice it together at the handle area and sandwich it between hickory to make a bow.  looking for something in the 40
3 range 66-72" long.  If possible any recomendations on thickness of each piece would be helpful

Don't think mahogany will make very good bow wood, it's a little too brittle.

Seen a splice something like that. Not sure what the woods were. I'll try to find it and give you a link.

Here it is. It was in the build-a-long section.

Hope that helps.

MaceG  thanks
that is very much what I was looking for, although I am not sure now if mahogany is a very good wood to make a bow out of.

You never know until you try? Unless it cost you a fortune, I'd say go for it.

Here's a link to a list of bow woods that Tim Baker put together.
