48" Hickory Asiatic Self bow.
« on: August 19, 2009, 02:20:17 pm »
So I made this a while ago trying to get to an asiatic looking design without horn or sinew and I think it came out pretty good. It is one solid piece of wood with the exception of support strips to keep the recurves static. It isn't totally finished but I haven't posted in a while so I thought I would show you guys this. It is hickory 48" long, approx. 40# @ 30". Limbs are about 1.125" wide. Draw is smooth until string angle with recurves increases near full draw. There is about 2.5" of unbraced set but I like to flex the limbs backwards a bit after I unstring it. I have another piece of wood waiting so I'll try and keep the limbs wider, up the draw weight, and loose some set. Pics were taken with my webcam so they're kind of crappy. Thanks for looking. (^_^)

Very nice little bow. 8)  I believe you captured the asiatic design with this bow. The tiller looks very good also. You got quite a substantial bend in this little hickory bow.  :o
One option that may help you with the set is to temper(heat treat) the belly. This will increase the compression strength and it should improve your next hickory bow.

HA! Thanks for all the comments already. Funny thing is, I did heat treat the belly! But I did it without inducing reflex and more for just to increase the compressive strength. I know what your saying though. Thanks again.
