Ash Self Bow
« on: June 27, 2009, 09:52:37 am »
A neighbor gave me a seven inch log of ash a year and a half ago. I never had time to split it until last September and never even then worked on it until a month ago. I have wood for three more bows but will work on other wood (yew, osage, and hickory) first.
This bow is 70" ntn. Flares are 2" tapering to 5/8" nocks. The tips have a simple overlay of maple. The handle is 4 1/2" between the base of the flares.
It is built up of yew and mountain maple and is too long. The bow is stained with Minwax ponderosa pine with a layer of satin varathane. It pulls about 45# at 26" and has taken about 1/2" of set.
I would redo the handle but I'm giving the bow to the neighbor and I doubt he'll ever shoot it.

I find things kept 'a bit more simple' more attractive.  I like that bow.  I'm looking forward to a good piece of ash, someday! >:D

That's a good lookin bow Don! You don't post very many bows but I always like seeing your work. Come to think of it, I don't post very many bows ;D.

Looks great. Love the wood color contrast.

Nice bow Don. Ash is another I have trouble with so I'm always impressed with nice ash bows. Also good to see you showing your work. Always a joy to see.
