Tallahatta quartzite Newnan
« on: June 13, 2009, 10:31:26 pm »
Haven't had much time to knap lately, but I sat down this afternoon and knocked out this 4 1/2" Newnan from Tallahatta quartzite. Wood and antler percussion, antler and copper pressure. I got the chunk of Talahatta from Wade at Hickory, thanks Wade. Tallahatta is sweet rock,  I like that stuff.

Man what a beaut! Killer material looks like. Kinda reminds me of hixton?

Never tried a Newman.Florida point type?  We have alot of points here called Adenas that  favor those but  have a rounded stem.

That is nice, Steve. I'd like to play with some of that quartz.  Tim, the same point with a rounded base down here is a Marion. The tips on Newnans usually slope down like a Hillsborough, the same point except it has a small triangular base.

Thanks, guys.
Eddie:ROAD TRIP!! We need to head to Mississippi and grab a truckload of that stuff.
Shannon: I won't whack one with copper, but I've been known to poke one with a pointy piece of copper now and then....;D
Tim, yeah, they're from FL, GA, AL, the deep south.
Paul, Tallahatta ain't near as tough as that quartzite we have here, it knaps pretty good. It ain't Georgetown, but it flakes a lot better than our local stuff.

That's a beatuy Steve. Nicely done.  Never tried Tallahatta, though I've seen some at the Schiele knap-in (being knapped, not for sale or trade).
