hemp backed black locust recurve
« on: June 10, 2009, 04:04:04 pm »
I haven't done many recurves.  This is a BL board with some lots of sever ring violations backed with some light hemp fabric I found called summercloth.  It is 62" ntn, 65# at 27".  1 & 5/8 inches wide in lower limbs.  Had some splintering in steaming so I put thin bl lams on belly at tips (6" long).  Hemp  painted a dark brown. Urethane over all.  Hemp wrapping on grip.  Osage tip overlays.

Wow, pics my wife and I took stink.  Taking more.

Looks like you did good work on that bow.  Nice how you lamed the splintered area, too.

Full draw pic.   Also, my hemp cord wrap.

Yeah, the handle cut was offset for center fire.  First time I tried this.  I have to get it in the hands of someone who can aim it at things to see how that works.  Shoots nicely across a field.

The 2x6 from which this was ripped had pretty nice grain orientation throughout the mid portion of the boards, with the grains turning out willy nill in the out outer parts.  Probably contributed to splintering in the bending.

I boiled the ends for 50 minutes for bend them and they were still pretty stiff.  Next time, I'll steam them out of the water and I have to set up a better form. I'll do another one this summer

Thanks to Marc SL on tip belly lam advice and to Nomadic Pirate on cord wrap

Ya know, I'm really surprised at the lack of comment on the hemp fabric.  This is the first such fabric backed bow I know of on this board.
