my first boo backed ipe bow (Finished pic's)
« on: June 03, 2009, 05:55:16 pm »
Well I finally gave in to the temptation and got a hold of some ipe after seeing all the fine bows KnightD and Robustus were making. Wow, this stuff is every bit as good as they said it is.....I'm very impressed. Here's my first atempt at a Highly deflexed reflexed little bow. It's 60"ntn and pulls a hair over 50#@28" it's as smooth as much longer bows I have shot and it's a rocket launcher to....

That's really cool looking Ryan. I like how you put most of the grip on the back. I wanted to try that but was unsure how to get the bamboo around it smoothly. Great job :)

Nice bow, Ryan. You're gonna love ipe. The only thing osage has on ipe is that it is osage. ;D But like osage, it doesn't take much ipe to make a hunting weight bow. 8)

Thanks guys, sorry about the crappy pictures. I'll post some better one's when its all finished. I was over to outbackbob's tonight and we were shooting it, man is it smooth and it hits hard to.

Jesse, The boo bent around this easy. I first glued the riser to the red oak center lam then I glued on the ipe belly over the handle riser and to the red oak core on my form. Then I glued the bamboo on the back and added more reflex on a torges style form with the blocks under the tips. The center lam is tapered as was the ipe before glue up. Call me if you want more detals.

Looks good Ryano, I was gonna talk a bit with ya about those washed out pics and the fact that we can't see that perty thang very well, but you already know I see? ;)

Bring on some better pics. How thick is your ipe lam?

Timo, the Ipe is 1/4" in the handle and tapers to 1/8" at the tips. It sure doesn't take much ipe to make a bow.  Ya, the pictures do it no justice, you can't even see the laminations in the handle.

That is fantastic! Love that profile. Would love to see a build along, forms, etc.
Just remember, you can't put the wood back on.
