what kind of glue for a splice
« on: April 23, 2009, 06:12:30 pm »
I have some osage billets I need to splice and i was wondering what kind of glue is best?  Would tite bond work?

I like some kind of epoxy for splices. Justin

I have used TB without a problem, but you need a good tight joint. Urac is great because it fills any gaps you might have.

Thank you justin and dano.  I was thinking about using tite bond and then drilling and gluing a couple of dows through the splice.

You can severely weaken the splice by adding the drilled holes and dowels. If your splice is good enough you don't need to add the pins. It don't even have to be all that good of a splice to work. ;)

I'd recomend urac, resorcynol, or epoxy.Never tried the tb glues for splices, but if Dano says it works, then there ya go.

Pat, I have dowelled many splices, but not for the purpose of strength, but primarily for alignment. Get a good dry fit,(alingment)drill it,then when ya slap the glue to it,the dowells will line ya up perfect.Probly not needed,Just helps me to get it right. ;D

We use resorcynol,it works good and lots of time It will need to be steamed after it has been put together, steam don't bother the joint,Like Tim said I don't dowel any except for alignment,
Gary Davis [he dose hundereds] said there was no value in the pins except for alignment. :)
So I don't usually use them. :)

I've used TB III and Urac 185 without any problems. Not sure if you need to dowel it ,like Pat said a good fit would be enough.

Yeah like pappy says, Gary has done probably thousands of splices over the years and uses resorcinol. I have done but a few osage splices over 15 years ago and still with no problems. I have a osage elb that Steve Martin built and within a year the glued splice gave way. He said he had used 2-ton epox. I wouldn't trust titebond in any form , just my opinion for a splice! Best to you, Steve

I doweled one splice, and it broke through the dowel holes after about a hundred shots. Won't do that again.
