The laburnum bow is done!!!

Hi all,

finally I managed to get the laburnum bow finished.

It's 64"ntn and draws 53#@28"
I spliced two billets of home-garden grown laburnum, the handle riser is cherry and the bow is backed with watersnake skin.
After tillering and some shooting, the reflex is mostly gone.



















After having worked with that wood, I think that its physical qualities are as good as osage. It sure looks better ;)
For me, Laburnum is probably the best locally growing bowwood.
It seems a bit harder than osage but is similar workable. Probably as "brittle".

Very nice work! - have a full length stave waiting in the workshop, too!
Is yours sapwood on or just heartwood??

Hallo Frank,

it's only heartwood.
The sapwood felt pretty soft and somehow "spongy" so I decided to remove it. However, the colour contrast would certainly look great.

Very nice bow. 

It is indeed a pretty wood.  I have a set of Laburnum billets that Glenn Doane gave me a few years ago.  Still haven't done anything with them though

In real it looks different from BL and the texture is different, too. The wood probably can compete with osage in tension and compression.

Radon, it's been used for ELBs with sapwood on, so i guess I'll go for that...
