English Long Bow

ELB  45# @ 28"   71" ntn

Iron wood (olea capensis) backed with hickory ,  wildebees (gnu) tips , bone arrow rest
Made this bow for my Dad ,he's 79 and been shooting all his life. I tried to convince him to take one of my 110# war bows , but he wanted something that was not going to strain him too much ....  ;D

Good looking bow, really like those wildebeest tips, too. I didn't figure hickory would be easy to find in Africa.

Hillbilly - Hickory is not easy to get here , espesialy bow quality ... !!!!!
I get myn'e from a local wood merchant who deals in rear woods , he gets in maybe every five years and I have to go through hundreds of boards to find maybe one or two that I can use, then I have to wait until his stock is finished before he gets in some more. Just had five bows break on me one after the other due to a bad batch of hickory that I have just bought ...  >:( >:( :'(
Trying to find a local wood that can work but haven't found anything that matches hickory yet

Dean - The Iron wood (Olea capensis .subsp. macrocarpa) grows here and is one of the principal trees of the dry forests around this area, some of the last old wood coastal forests left in this country. They grow up to 120 ft . It is very dense 1.1 - 1.2 sg and is one of the woods I  use to replace Ipe , I want to only use indigenous woods in my bows , but as there is no info on our local woods it is just a matter of tryle and error, but slowly I'm getting there .... ???   I get most of my wood from a merchant , who cuts his own wood and knows what I'm looking for.
