Hickory backed Yew w. Snakeskin
« on: March 26, 2009, 11:04:44 pm »
This is a recurve bow I made from yew billets that I hauled out on my bicycle from a roadless area near my home. It has hickory strip billets for backing. 64" ntn. 1 5/8" at flares both sides of 4" handle. Used a piece of moose bone Marc St. Louis gave me a long time ago for the arrow plate. Handle leather was form fitted around the bone plate. Handle is built up from oak to osage to yew and covered with a simple piece of garmet quality dark brown leather.  Yew belly is satin varathaned. Tips are oak on top of the hickory backing. Covered with rattlesnake skin.
Pulls 48# at 26". Bookmarked for April  LBOM >:D

Wow, this one might get my vote.  I never seen a yew bow backed with hickory.  Looks like a good job.

Sweet looking bow there Don. Great job. I'd love to try making a yew bow someday. Really beautiful wood.

Awesome bow Don, The profile is fantastic and I love the overall look of it. You nailed the tiller and with the hickory backing, I bet it's a fast and sweet shooter. Congratulations.   Keenan
