104 Hazelnut Staves for Bring Back the Bow
« on: March 01, 2009, 11:21:00 am »
Hello,

Well our commitment to deliver 100 Staves for this June's event was finally fulfilled yesterday.

What is "Bring Back the Bow"?

"Bringing Back The Bow"   is a group of unpaid volunteers who provide positive role models while working one on one with Native American children for a week long camp of traditional bow and arrow making and learning horseback archery.  The bow camp brings together Native American elders and Native American youth promoting traditional values of respect, honesty and courage. Through these teachings they will gain a better understanding of their culture and language allowing them to reach their highest potential and change their lives. This years camp will be held on the Cheyenne Sioux Reservation from June 8th through 12th in Eagle Butte, South Dakota.

Jack Holthaus is the Oregon volunteer and he contacted TAO (Traditional Archers of Oregon) and asked for donation in the form of cash & staves.  We have elected to provide $250 to pay for just a small portion of the meals, but we stepped up and donated 104 split and scraped Hazelnut Staves.  Between myself and TAO president Rich Thompson, we collected over 100 staves over the last three weekends.  Then on yesterday, Wes Wallace donated his bow shop and equipment so we could split and scrape all 104 staves.

If anyone is interested in attending the event in June, or donating Bow making supplies, arrow making supplies, or cash to help pay for meals, please contact Jack using the official website posted below.  This is a 501.C.3 (Non Profit) organization, so all donations are tax deductible.

Thanks and enjoy the pics of the volunteer session yesterday.
