which grow rings are more important?
« on: January 03, 2009, 08:16:31 am »
hi all
I had a question about grow rings. Ive got a nice piece of elm now, but at the side it very straight grained.
but at the belly side its a bit sloppy. I figured that that doesnt matter a lot becaurse you're gonna round
the belly anyway. I jsut wanted to know;)

Hello

A photo would be not bad so we can look at the rings. Otherwise itīs already difficult to finde a correct answer.

best regards

Well a high ring count is not the be all end all, a high ring count is good but if the wood is very dense then this makes up for a lower ring count. I had some pacific yew with about 60- 80 / inch but felt in weight like balsawood and had trouble getting a 75lbs bow out of the stave. Then i have a stave that has only has 60 - 80 rings but the weight was very high and i got a very nice 140 lbs bow out of it.

but like Bernhard has said post a pic thats a lot more help

Regards Ian

Hi Ian,
can we see some pictures of the 140lb bow? Are you shooting this weight now, if so you certainly have got there quick.
