got one ....finally
« on: November 16, 2008, 03:11:43 pm »
Seems like I've spent a lot of time in the tree since Oct 1 but finally connected!! :)

Bow was an osage I made this summer, backed with a couple ribbon snake skins,   (45#@ 26")  and rose shoot arrows with 125 gr. 2 blade Ace.  Shot was about 10 yards.. also was about 25 degrees and windy= COLD!! 8) Tree stand about 8' off the ground.  Broadhead made an exit hole but arrow stayed in deer.

I got a this button buck this morning  ...had so many deer this morning, bet I saw 7-8 bucks from my stand.  3 or 4 went by at 15 yards or so this morning at 6:15 but was just to dark to see/shoot... a couple were big bucks I think from what I could see.  They were all chasing a hot doe!!

Saw a couple later and had a nice 8 pointer at 15 yards on the wrong side of the tree. (Grunted him in with a couple grunts on the tube!! ) Moved around and was able to come to half draw but bow tip hit a  branch and it didn't feel good for shoot.  Buck circled around me till it was down wind and knew something was up so walked off the way he came in.

Was hit too far back but bled like crazy and piled up about 60 yards away. Took the young Jack Russell (Charlie) since I thought it would be one we could find fairly easy.  My wife is the trainer and we have been working some short blood trails at home.   Since it was a short trail,  it was a good experience for Charlie!! (Charlie's 3 1/2 months old)

Congratulations Lowell. Cool story thanks for sharing. You must have got the main artery going to the back legs. Thats about the time it takes to bleed them out when you hit that femoral artery

yeah definitely a femoral artery hit.  it is one of my biggest fears as a medic.  even if you are right there you have to stop it sooo fast.......femoral artery plus a arrow and a deer =meat on the table every time, and tender meat at that.  good job brother.  glad you made some meat and are training the dog.  i train my german shepard husky mix with chicken blood and he picked up the idea quickly.  he has found quite a few for me since we started using him.  and of course....he loves it!  congrats again.  i have yet to lay down a deer with primitive equip, and envy those who have.  hunt hard!
