Knapp a long Clovis
« on: September 23, 2008, 01:33:11 pm »
I know some of you have been asking how to knapp a clovis point, so last night i tuck my GF's camera out my knapping pit and tuck pics. so here go's!
The 1st 5pics are your basic reduction and thinning, (note, i used a more acute angle so to have a more defined cross section) also i tyred hard not to have any unevenness of steps or henge's.

these Pics show how you set up your platfor for your fluting flack (AKA the nipple)
1st flack the back of the point at a sharp angle to raise your center line.
2nd presher flack your guide flacks.
3rd isolate your platform
4th abrade your platform, (note. i also abrade my ears)

The next 3 pics show how to hold your point to give it support when removing the flut.
i squeeze the point tightly on both sides and press it into my leg pad, i take a few practice swings with my billet and yell "make it or brake it" and wack it.

i then use my presher flaker and bring my center line up to the other face, than i grind it and shoot my guide flacks (shown in the 1st pic)
2nd i isolate the nipple, and grind it just like the 1st one and support it the same.

after the 2nd flute i dress up the end of the point some with my presher flaker, than i abrade it , than i sharpen and straiten my edges with a presher flaker, and i abrade the end of the point by the flutes. and then your done.
Hope this helps some of ya, good luck and happy flaking!

But I think to get into this "not the best example"- state you broke a lot of Clovis`.
Wish I would be in this state.

Aw, come on man, this is the internet.  If you'd broke it, two words, "super glue" and none of us would have known.  ;)  Wickedly nice point.  Thanks for sharing.

Nice point Jesse and thanks for taking the time to do a build along. Little to advanced for me
but still interesting.

Excellant knap along Jesse! Your quite the advanced knapper and put out some beautiful points. I haven't messed with clovis or folsom's much - may have to try my hand at it now :).

Thanks Jesse, I have a problem notching but I think its mostly because I don't get the point thin enough :(

Do you do any punch notching?
