groundhog skin shooting tabs
« on: August 21, 2008, 11:09:49 am »
My son wants to make his own shooting tabs. I've heard that groundhog hide is tough, and they're easy enough to get, so if we bark tan a couple 'chucks, do you think that leather would make good shooting tabs?  If not, what kind of critter skin would you use?  (preferably a critter we can get in pennsylvania.)
I should know better.

Probably would-I've made "buckskin" form groundhog hide before. It's really tough, but pretty thin-you might have to build it up a few layers thick to make a tab. The thick neck skin from a deer would work well, too.

Progress might have been all right once but it's gone on for far too long.
