Ash backed Yew Longbow
« on: August 19, 2008, 02:37:37 pm »
This is a White Ash backed Yew longbow I just made for a guy in England.  The bow is 6' long, 1 1/2" wide at the center and pulls 55# @ 28".  It has WB horn nocks with the top nock having a double string groove cut in.  The finish is alternating coats of Tung oil, Shellac with a final sealant of Carnauba paste wax  Here's a few pictures

That's another nice one Marc! Tiller's perfect! Looks like a bow I could shoot comfortably.

Thats a great looking bow. Did you make it from a piece of yew lumber or a decrowned stave?

Thanks guys.

The bow was made out of a belly split from a stave.

The Tung oil really brings the color out in the wood as you can see in this picture

Absolutely lovely.  Yew heartwood backed with ash or hickory looks like a really good way to make a traditional compass bow style when yew staves are hard to find.  I make ELBs but have still not got my hands on any yew (common as rocking horse manure here in the UK).  Well done with this one.

Ash and Yew are a good combination.
