King Ron's new Osage.[New pictures finished]
« on: July 07, 2008, 07:33:50 am »
Ron finished tillering his Osage bow this weekend,he has only been working on it for about a year.
After seeing it I don't know why I gave him that stave. It is sister billets splice in the handle .then about a year ago we straighted it and put in about 5 inches of reflex. They usually don't hold over a couple of inches if you are careful and lucky but this one held about 3 inches right after shooting
and over 4 inches after rest.He wanted 45 @ 26 so we stopped at about 48 @ 26.it is 66 tip to
tip.64 n-n 1 1/2 to mid limb then tapered to 3/8 or a little less at the the tips. Here are some pictures,I will post more when he gets it finished and all dressed up.

Yes it will,he has some shoulder trouble,so he wanted something light but fast, now he has it.
The other bow he was shooting was light and had some string follow and he had to kind of lob them in,but this one will putting right when you point. He don't have any excuses now.  ;) ;D ;D

The best part of making bows is when you have shoulder problems you can make another. No need to spend $800 on something.  Great bow Ron.  Justin

Looking good Ron.  Sorry I didn't get to come sling an arrow through it myself. ;)

Man that's great!  That a spliced-handle bow?!?  Could we see a photo of the splice?

Very cool bow, and with that much reflex, cast should be really good. Tell Ron, no worries, good things take time!!

They say well seasoned wood makes a better bow than just Dry wood. I'm starting to believe it. Either that or that piece was just really dry from all the hot box time it saw. I still think most of us guys tend to rush it, in the seasoning process. Super dry wood just makes a better bow.

Nice bow Ron.

I agree Ryan, Dry and seasoned are 2 different things.I am thinking of floor tillering some and re flexing them and then just put them away for a year or 2.This piece was cut in 02,Worked down and spliced in 04 and reflexed in 05.Then made the bow this weekend,I have worked a lot of bows and always take my time tillering ,but this was the best I have seen, don't mean some don't do better ,they may But I haven't seen them.It hasn't been in the hot box until last week,it
has just been in the archery shop in the corner.I don't know if was just that piece of wood or if the seasoning had a lot to do with it ,but I plan on trying a few and see,all I have is time and got plenty
to work on.I will let yall know in 2/3 years. ;D ;D ;D ;) I do have 4 or 5 I floor tillered 2 or 3 years ago and just ant got around to them yet,so I may pull one out and give it a try.I usuall give Osage at least a year but ant sure that is really long enough to get the most out of it. :)

Nice work Ron, and Pappy I think your on to something, extra curing time never hurts anything, unless were talkin about cookies. Course I have seen some exceptional osage a time or two could be some of that reaction wood  ::)
