2021 elk/bear hunt
« on: September 10, 2021, 09:09:51 pm »
I'm currently in the mountains of Colorado watching a small water hole and hoping to see the bear that has been leaving tracks all around it.  Tomorrow we are going to scout new elk grounds.  Someone you guys might recognize is watching another water hole nearby.  He's using a selfbow.   I'm using a glass bow.  I'll post some pictures when I get back home.
I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Yes it is Pat.  It's super dry and hot.  We've been focusing on water holes.

Good luck you guys. It's been hot out west all summer.Experiences like this you'll always remember.
Clint I just made a trade deal with an old buckskinning friend that lives in Minnesota.I traded 1 of my holmgaard bows for a 4 point bull hide.A sateilite bull from a herd.He shot the bull with a wood laminated bow and wooden arrow of less than 50# draw.Says he's taken bear with the same bow.The bow I sent him pulls 58#'s @ 28".
Some how the law in Idaho permitted him to get a tag for $37.00 because of his age he says. He's quite the hunter/trapper/fisherman.

I was in the San Juan Mountains in 2006 and again in 2010 with Kenneth Gorman(Little John). Kenneth invited me out and we had a blast even though the elk didn't cooperate. Being an East Coaster just seeing and experiencing the Southwestern Mountains was awe inspiring. On my first trip out there I sprained my ankle pretty badly a few days in and Kenneth had to hike out 2 miles and 1000' in elevation, drive 2 hours back to his house and load up horses to come back in to haul my butt out. He left at day break and got back about sunset. Even after that Kenneth invited me back out in 2010 for another hunt. We heard a few elk in the distance but never close enough for a shot. I did, however have a wolf within 25 yards of me. What a thrill that was.
Even at 71 years old, I'd go back in a heart beat if I had the cash to do so. If you've never seen the Mountain West, you owe it to yourself to try to get out there.
 Don't forget the pics, Clint.

It's been a big day. Started off with bacon and eggs. Then we climbed a steep mountain slope and scouted around the flat top. We went back to camp in time for a wind storm. You could see the wall of dust coming for 20 minutes. We had 50 mph wind for about an hour. The tents held up OK. We all held on to my big dome shelter to keep it from blowing away. It took a little damage but luckily I brought duct tape. After the storm passed we sat the water holes and my friend shot a bear.  It was an old saw taken with a selfbow.  We just had burgers for dinner. What a great day!

I've been through a couple of high wind bad storms back in the day with my tipi. One the tornado was 1/2 mile away.1" an hour rains. The tipi held up like a champ. Can't say that about the wall tents though. Some were in the lower limbs of the trees around camp.
Your friend timed his hunt right. Many times animals move well after a storm.
Sure hope you get a shot bud.Hunting like that is a full time job.Just like the natives years ago.

Good luck, Clint!  What area are you hunting?  We have hunted mostly around Steamboat Springs in rifle season,  the less rugged country is a bit easier on old legs and bad knees! Have a safe and productive hunt!
