Warbird's Wing III 65# Heat Tempered HHB

~65 to 70# @28"
67.5" knock to knock
1 1/4" wide mid limb
19oz
Zero set

Chocolate buckskin handle, antler arrow rest.  The self knocks looked so good l I decided to leave them plain.

This was a challenge to tiller because of a roller coaster in the upper limb and twist in the lower limb, as well as a lump near the lower tip that always looked like a hinge.  It made me pay very close attention to thickness taper, so this may be the best tillered bow I have made yet, despite the wavy look :)

I tempered it twice during tillering, and then once at the end to take out a little set.  This bow is actually to strong for my weighing system, but I projected the weight to be between 65 and 70#.  All going well I'll test the bow for distance this weekend.

I can't believe how slender this bow is.  It's a shade over half an inch thick mid limb, but it is so stiff!  This is my favorite design, and I just love the look of tempered HHB.  ;D

Nice work. That’s STOUT! :o Smart to keep it on the longer side. Bet it’s a pleasure to shoot.

I had a little fun shooting out on the lake today.  This bow shot a 300 grain quicky flight arrow 167 yards, and a 650 grain ash arrow with 3 5" shield cut feathers 150 yards.  On the second try the ash arrow landed within about 10 ft of it's first hit.  The arrow ploughed out sizeable gouges in the ice, but didn't even have a blunted head!

I love hophornbeam. I have a short stave (53 inches) on my drying rack and two longer logs (61 and 72 inches) I still need to split that were cut in December. I will probably cut a few more logs before winter's end. This wood is the osage of the north.

If your flight arrow would have been heavier it would have gone farther.

Thanks for the input.

That is kind of what I thought when I saw the flight arrow go only a little further than the mini war arrow.  I'm headed out again tomorrow to try again, and this time I'm putting draw markers on the arrows.  TTB v1 states that this bow should shoot about 180 yards, so I may have underdrawn today.

I used google maps to measure the distances today, but the problem is that after 500 ft. it gives distances in miles. I need a precise way to measure out to 200 yards.

I defiantly under-drew yesterday.  I shot the same ash arrow 195 yards today pulling to 27.5".  I'm going to try to break 200 this afternoon.  We located a 50m tape and are using that to measure distance, though converting to yards is a little tricky. :)

Thanks, you know what a good shot is like.

I impressed myself.  It turns out the passage from TBB 1 (p 115) was based on a 28" draw and a 500 grain arrow, so I did better than I thought.
