Winchester 3006 casings for arrowheads
« on: November 04, 2020, 06:49:24 am »
I just found that the small diameter of a Winchester 3006 casing will fit nicely over a 5/16 shaft with just a little sanding.  Also, if you cut off the casing's tapper they fit over a 3/8 shaft with minimal wiggle room.  A whole casing weighs about 190 grains.  So far I've been sanding down 3/8 shafts to fit the standard .38 casing, but I'm thinking of switching.

That's good to know, I'll have to check out my .300 win mag shells but I think the bottom is a lot wider than a 3006

30 carbine and 30;30 work well too! I had lots of 30;30 shafts as a kid.

After cutting the taper off I put the case on my powder scale. Dribble enough lead shot in the pan to get to desired weight. Pour the shot in the case and glue it on.

When trying to find optimal weight I just tape the case to the shaft. That way I can add or take away shot as needed.

P.s. I sometimes grind a bevel on the case head. They penetrate hay bales better instead of bouncing off as often.
