Will these boards make arrows?
« on: August 04, 2020, 06:22:39 am »
I felled the most flawless pine tree I could find. Split the log into 1-1.75" thick 47" long boards. Turns out it's twisted and has knots. I need 30 to 31" long arrows for a 30 pound, 28" draw bow. I can't saw them up -- no table saw. Would these boards make decent arrows? If so, what diameter should be suitable, and what square blank makes this diameter? First photo is a second log. Thanks.

I'd say yes. You can split it out to 1/2"x1/2" square billets then remove the 4 corners with a plane then the 8 corners than sand it smooth. Chuck the rounded shafts in a drill and smooth and adjust to the required spine.
Remember that the spine value is for a 28" arrow with a 125gr head so for a 30" to 31" arrow the spine value will have to be stiffer by 10# to 15#.

Like pat says. You'll probably make a lot of kindling but you should make some arrows. Try alternating ends when splitting.

Thanks for feedback. Now to wait for the boards to dry...

Stack and sticker them in a good dry place so they will dry evenly without warping.

That's what I did. Going to turn them also.
