hey i am having a hard time making a string for the bow trade. the thing thats getting me is how much string should i bend over to make the loops so i can add that amount to the length of the bow to know how long i should make the string.

I make the loops as small as possible but still big enough to slide past the bow tips towards the limb, just a little bit so you can string it. Do you twist the string or continue loop? If you twist your string, make it close to the lenght you need for correct brace height and then when string is done you can give or take twists to the string for precise brace height

16 inches longer than the bow will give you room to work with.

If you use a string jig all this calculation will be done for you. I start my loops with 7" of string on the bottom and 7 1/2 on the top because the top has a slightly larger loop. This is just the formula that works with my string jig, it is not written is stone. I have made so many strings on my jig that I know I need to have the peg in the 63" hole to make a 64" string that I won't have to twist a bunch of times to make it fit.

I would imagine each jig will have it's own slight differences.

I found a free string jig pattern on-line, works really well, can't remember the site but it didn't take much of an image search to find one.

Just searched for free bow string jig pattern on google images and half a dozen came up along with many tutorials on how to use them

Two nails and a surface to drive them into is all the jig you need.

Put feet on your jig and you can hold it between your legs and make strings while you sit and watch TV.

I watched about every YouTube vid I could find. That was a good start. One thing I found was that I got slightly different results than everyone else. I think a combo of how tight you twist, how big you make your loops, how long you leave the tails are all as individual as fingerprints. When you make your jig don't label the lengths on too soon. Put a piece of masking tape on it and write your results on that. This pin equals 60" or whatever. Measure the string length after it's been shot a few times so it's settled. Try to do the same method for every string. After your method has stabilised you will notice that the same length hits the same pin. Then you can label it permanently

In string flemish making you want a finish string that is twisted up between 15 and 20 times to be the right length. Any more and your string will stretch forever while you shoot it if it is a B-50 type string, even a fast flight will have to be continually adjusted for a while before it settles out.

well im using b 50 so what should my length be if my bow is 86 1/2" long?
