« on: May 02, 2020, 06:11:19 am »

Yep for sure probably a nice retro bend Im going to tiller to about 20" first before bending the hooks this one is going to be real close to Laubin style with out the pin knocks so I can use a primitive stringer ,Im not exspecting stack free on this one  ;D

Those style of bows are made to shoot exactly half their total length.   Don't try for 30.

Well will see Im going with what looks safe if 27" -28" thats fine too ,this bow really has no practical purpose for me just making it for a challenging & fun build !

You know Patm the more I think about it Laubin made some 52" bows that pulled 65lb @26" he believed quality osage was as good as horn in compression, Im not saying I beleve it but this stave is one of the best I have ever seen no knots beutiful rings so Im going to take this one to at least 29" @45lb or if need be drop the weight some, I think it will take it ,Im using elk sinew and letting it cure at least 4 months or better , I will post more when tillered to 20" & brace just got it to long string !

Those were D bows though.  The Martin style is a different animal.

No he did it with the Robert Martin style also but they ended up with string follow in the working limbs but he didn't pre reflex the limbs before sinew like I did so mine might be stressed more , well the best thing to do is get this one built and see where it goes really the only way to find out !  Mine is a little over 55" ntn so 28" is realistic beyound that I don't know !

That's what I'm saying 55 1/4 "  27.625 so for sure 28" and go from there !

That's the sensible limit.  Going beyond that will just degrade it.

My advice:  Get it really perfect at 27".  I mean like really perfect, no set tiller.  Then send it to me!  (Oh, and maybe try for 50# if it's not too much trouble.)

Looks and sounds like a great piece of hedge. Will follow along, and good luck. I'm sure you'll know when enough is enough as far as draw length goes.

Interesting, I presume you will be making it a bendy handle? Rigid handle is almost making it fail by design. 30" is a handful of inches too many haha!
Horn and osage similar in compression....? I don't think so!
Good luck with the bow :)
