Question about uneven set between limbs

Hey guys I am a bit puzzled on this bamboo/osage ASL longbow I am working on. This bow was glued up with symmetrical limbs and a flat profile. The bow has been tillered for split finger and has a  3/16" positive tiller at brace height. the draw cycle of the bow is very smooth and the bow does not rock or pull in the hand as I reach full draw.


My question is in regards to the difference in set between the limbs. The bottom limb has only taken 1/2" of set while the top limb is twice that at 1" of set. After shooting the bottom limb is just under 3/4" set while the top limb is 1-1/4" of set.

  I have never had a (what I believe to be) well-tillered bow that had such differences in set between the limbs. My bows typically have only up to 1/4" difference in set between both limbs.

 This bow feels well balanced, but the difference in set between the limbs leads me to believe otherwise.   Any thoughts?  Is this difference in set going to affect the longevity of the bow?

Will you post an unbraced and braced profile shot. The full draw looks very good.

Pat, I am out of town this week so the braced/unbraced will have to wait until this weekend. The bow profile is a string follow American semi longbow.

Jim, I felt the same way, it just puzzles me why this one is different than my other builds.

wood is an organic material and sometimes unpredictable to a point,,Like Jawge says, sometimes set happens,,

Bottom line? If is shoots well, don't give set another thought.

+2    I get that on a few of my bows,  and rather than keep removing material and risking a hinge or coming in under weight,  I leave it alone.

0.5 inch difference isn't bad.  I have it happen a lot; I'd let it be, as bow wood is a plant material.  Nice bows you're making, btw.

If it shoots without handshock and the set does not get any worse I would leave it. If I look at the full draw pic the bottom limb does look a tiny bit stiff so you can give that a few scrapes.

The tiller looks really good to me, I would shoot it and forget about the string follow as it is discussed often and is of little importance unless it is over 3" or so.

I made a 3 piece T/D from ash. The upper limb was the belly split of the lower and had just 2 growthrings. The lower limb has 5. Tillering wasn't easy. The 2 ring limb needed a lot more exercise to settle down and didn't take as much set as the other...
