How to determine string length

So, I picked up a sweet vintage wooden bow. Its in very good shape. and there is no makers mark or brand name on it. I will take some pictures tonight. There are some numbers stamped on the Belly, an R     74 and the number 25. It had no string. where do I start with putting a string on it? How do I determine how long it should be?

Are you making a Flemish string? Endless?
Are you using  a jig?
What is the bow weight?
It is a little tougher without a jig but it is doable.

Depending on stretch, about 4-5 inches shorter than the bows ntn length is how I make my fast flight style strings.

I will get more info, when I get home. I don't know the poundage, I am not making my own string.  will measure the NTN length and snap some pictures of it.

I'd recommend, if you're going to buy string, contact whomever gonna buy it from. Let them be involved in the process.

So the bow measures NTN 66 3/4” it’s pretty slender measuring only 1.25” at the widest point of the limb. That’s about 10 inches from the center of handle.  Next trying to figure how to load a pic from my phone

Looks like a round sticker or some king of label or medallion was on the bow. Those are the only markings on it.  I will need a string if anyone is interested.

If you’re not going to make a string then buy a 64” actual length Flemish twist string. If that doesn’t give you enough brace height you can twist it up enough to get your brace height where you want it.

Measure nock to nock.  3" shorter for a longbow and 4" shorter for a recurve.  Works out perfect for me and you simply twist the string to get where you want the brace height to be.  LoL………. basically what okie says.

Looks like an old lemon wood bow. Probably 25 pounds at 28....a ladies target bow. Love seeing these. Bet its 60 years old.
