60"Birch 32#28"Turboprop"
« on: August 10, 2018, 09:22:21 am »
As its raining today and I'm already into it, i will show you my 7th bow.
The 4th,5th and 6th i haven´t made enough pics, i will do after my holidays in slowenia, and show them as my family-quiver soon.
So this staves i cutted in autumn in about 1300m. I already knew i need more wood so i harvested Birch and Maple with about 15 cm diameter, to give it a try. )W(
Some splitted nicely, especially maple, but some were twisted and i got a few splinters which were drying fast over the oven after roughing them out  (=).
Not much wood was left on this ones, so this bows became kid and youth bows.
This one my nephew is shooting (SH)
Specs:
ttt:61", ntn:60", bh: 5.5", symetrical, mass 418gram with the handle wrap
handle bends a little bit, most of the bend at inner limbs, outer limbs steam bend, sidenocks are made of buffalo horn, arrowshelf some superglue infiltrated leather pieces.
Cross section is something like lenticular shaped, as there was not much wood left i had to fill two cracks with epoxy close to fade and two little pin holes outside the layered up and wrapped handle.
One crack is the underline for its name, and... ahh (lol) yes and she is totally twisted. (By the way respect to simons lately propeller - so short and the tiller outstanding (-P)
I finished her with some vinegar steel wool mixt. coating is resin dissolved in isopropyl 5 layers.

Excellent and a sweet looking bow.Not many birch are shown. It's not native here but makes excellent bows I've heard.Congrats.

Nice bow all around! Can you tell me how you aged the cane handle wrap?

Thanks for the compliments - i didn't appreciate that.
BowEd, Birch is quite soft and you must be careful during roughing her out as deep splinters come out easily. This bow turned out snappy for the  low weight, a bit hand shock and is not that accurate as the wild cherry
Weylin, i finished all my bows with pine resin, after, i fitted some leather pieces to make that shape on the back, some hot glue holds it on place before wrapping it, i painted the cane with some pigment left overs dissolved in pine resin - alcohol mixt. Several layers were needed to protect the bow from final coat. the used look i made with some steel wool. The final coat is Poly Urethan.... :NN..... as i really don't want any moisture inside the handle as she got a bit sticky from the resin as well

I’m gonna say you’re a born bowyer brother. The way you made that wood bend looks like a veteran whittled it out. Well done

Nice to see you back with another one Martin. They keep looking better. I might have got a little more bend mid limb especially top limb. Still very nice bow.
