"Just like Dads" A little osage recurve (full draw added)
« on: April 01, 2008, 12:26:11 am »
Well, my little boy will be 1 year old May 11, so I thought I better get started on a bow for him.  I cut the stave winter before last and just used it to practice chasing a ring on since only about 3' of it was all that was clear enough to use for anything.
I never had any intentions of using it for a bow, till my wife ask when I was going to make Mason one.
This was the first osage I ever cut and it had been in the house for over a year, so I was sure it was dry.
I started out just going to make a simple straight limbed longbow, but I traded Buck1 some feathers for a little copperhead skin that was too short to use on a big bow so I figured i'd just put it on this one. One thing lead to another and before I knew it I had recurved it, added tip overlays and a leather grip.
Since he's only 11 months old and i'm not sure if he'll be right or left handed, I decided to make it with a double shelf.
  It's 36" NTN
1" wide tapering down to 5/16" at the tips. The overlays are black walnut.
The draw weight is 10.5 lbs @ 12"
Who knows how long it will be before he can shoot it, but it will be ready when he is. ;D
I'll add a full draw shot as soon as I can get somebody to take the picture.   Thanks for looking, Saw Filer

Amazing bow.  I think a kids bow is harder to make than the regular size.

HOW CUTE!!!

Oh yes, I know, cute shouldn't be a term applied to a manly tool of hunting and warfare, but...

Looks like BOM material to me. These are the kind of bows that stick in a kids memory for the rest of his life. As my Grandad used to say, "Ya dun good."

Beautiful little bow. Well done.   If you give it to your son, he will be shooting it before you know it.  ;)     Pat

what a beauty.  i like the picture with your hand holding the handle (without it, one could think it's a regular sized bow  ;D )

Thanks everybody :) I am more proud of this one than any of my others and glad ya'll like it.   I look forward to seeing him shoot it.  At the rate he's going, it won't be long.
He started walking last weekend. It seems like only yesterday he was born.
Not this spring, but next spring i'm bringing him to the classic ;D

Wow, Shannon, that's an amazing little bow-couldn't get much better than that. They grow fast, it won't be long before he starts stealing your boots and Carrhart jackets and shooting your bows and losing your arrows.
