Hackberry bendy, 40# at 26”
« on: June 27, 2018, 05:25:13 pm »
I finally did all the finish work to the hackberry bendy handle bow. I ended up getting it to pull 40# at 26”. I heated in about 1” reflex when I heat treated and it ended up resting essentially flat. Though after shooting it has about 1” of temp set that creeps back after a few minutes. It’s about 53” n2n, 1 3/8” to the scallop hills and about 1 1/4” to the valley. It has 3/8” single side nocks with cow horn overlays. The handle has a built up cork with leather wrap. It weighs in at 13 ounces with te string. Finish is just one heavy coat of linseed oil, followed by 10-12 coats of truoil. It also has very tight growth rings that are hard for me to get in a picture but are apparent in person. This is the one I plan to put in the auction at mojam this year.

Thanks for looking,
Kyle

Wow, she's a fancy filly what with those wibbly-wobbly bits on the limbs! Someone is gonna be happy to win her hand, and a lot of others are gonna be green with envy.

Just wanted to bring this post back up...
I won the bow at the Mojam auction and it's better looking in person as than the pictures. It shoots as good as it looks too. Nice work Kyle.  :OK

Thank you sir. Glad you like it. I hope you don’t mind the single side nocks, I’m starting to become addicted to those things for smaller tips.

With those tiny tips there's no room for a second nock...  :o  ;)
Actually they look kinda cool but I did swap out the skinny, double loop string for a fatter single loop string with a bowyers knot for the lower limb. Seems to work better for my stringing technique and keeps the string attached for hanging it up by the string keeper.

Thanks guys. The stave smelled sort of like sugar cookies while heat treating. Sure beats them smell of the persimmon I just heat treated last night.
I haven’t started on thenyew just yet. I was waiting until I fully made up my mind as to what to do with it. And getting the confidence to properly execute the design. I was debating between a hedeby and a Mary rose. I’ve decided on a Mary rose. I’ll take some measurements and pick one that will fit the stave well. That and I keep having more projects pop up. I couldn’t build much over the last month, but now I should be free for a while, so I can get te other projects out of the way to focus on a couple fun ones for myself.
