Hickory backing strips does it matter ?

I have a pig nut stave off the stump 2 years and its the only I have that didnt take natural reflex so its ideal for backing strips at 3/16 I can get a lot out of it flat sawn does it matter Flat or edge grained
for backing its the same delima I had with core lams flat get a lot ,edge not so many ?

I believe all grain configurations work for backings.

I prefer bias grained(/////) or edge grain(llllll) but flat grain is fine too. Just try to keep the runoff at a minimum.

 (Thanks the shag bark I did was not as clean as this stave and it had minimal run off so I'm hoping this one will be fine I could 1/4 saw yet but would loose the outer wedge shape to waist, defently more bang for the buck flat sawn !
