Looking for natural fiber bow strings
« on: June 29, 2017, 10:16:14 am »
Greetings folks. I will be teaching a class on making wooden bows starting in mid-August, and would like to provide my students with natural fiber bow strings. I'm thinking reverse twisted strings made from flax thread, with each string having a loop at one end and of the appropriate strength for a bow that draws 40-50 pounds or so. Any string makers out there want to help me out? I know how to make strings, of course, and have some flax thread I could do it from, but I'm also fairly busy and am worried I wouldn't get them all done to the standard of quality I'd like.

In trade I can provide whitetail back sinew, turkey primary or secondary feathers, a couple hard maple bow backing strips, a hard maple board you could make a bow from if backed with one or more of said strips, various types of horn and bone that could be used for tip overlays, some stone arrowheads, or possibly other things. PM me if you'd like to talk trade.
