66" Yew bendy handle.
« on: March 23, 2017, 02:51:09 pm »
Hi all. This was a stave I acquired to build the bow my cousin ordered back in the summer. Well as I (way too) quickly roughed it out, I took too much out of the handle. The stave also had some twist and dogleg in it and I wasn't feeling patient enough to deal with it at the time, so it sat. I would have a look at it every once in a while to check for inspiration. Finally it came to me a few weeks ago. I decided to build my first bendy and see how it worked out. I am badly wanting a 72" plus ELB, and that will have to wait for the next one. I plan on shooting this one in the North American Longbow Safari in July, so now I have time to practice with shooting off my hand and finding "the spot" so I grip it in the same place every time so my nock point stays consistent. I have about a 100 shots out of it now and it is holding strong. Tips are Sitka black tail antler from Haida Gwaii, handle is some leather leftover from my back quiver. The bow is 66"ttt, weighs right at 16oz and draws a smooth 50lbs at 28". I may still bring the weight down a little as I shot in an SCA event this past weekend and shot about 60 arrows in a couple hours. I was tuckered out! Maybe I better just do more push-ups lol! Thanks for looking

a nice bow, glad you found a design for the piece of yew, and I wish we had some hereabouts to make one  similar.

can't imagine why you would want to make one 72" long, unless you are looking for a lot more weight?

nice quiver too.

Thanks everyone! The quiver was something I have wanted to do for a while, so I bought some leather and tools and just did it finally!

Willie the reason I want a 72"+ longbow is purely for the historical aspect of it. Horn nocks etc. I think it will be a lot of fun to shoot and to show people!

Nice bow Blyane. That should be a real smooth shooter with a good punch.

Thanks Goat! Too bad we didn't get a chance to do some shooting during our quick weekend adventure!
