Good Day Primitive archers,
My inner spirrit called me to make my own bow. It started when i tried archery for the the first time, the bow i used thou was like s modern one. So i took time to research into self bows. From the selection of wood, grain, tools and stuff like that im also planning to buy the Bowyers bible vol. 1

Please i need just some help and guidance, i already bought kiln dried plank wood with the moisture of content of 8~11 percent. The species is White Oak and Ash it was quite expensive since these woods are imported and they dont grow here. There Dimensions where around 4x5x6, Grain paterrn was rainbow shape but going to the right. To save money i split them in half so i could have more tries on one piece of wood.

Now for the help and Guidance part
-Is the wood ibought (hopefully) usable (was really expensive )?
-Also the design i want is flat bow design with a cut out shelf in the middle or arrow rest in the middle dont how u call it?
-I can see plent of flat bow designs online will they do? For example limb parts 1 3/4 tapering down etc?

Will i have to follow the grain meaning the back of the bow should be where the grain bends?

for your first bow, I'd recommend one without a cut in shelf and with a bendy handle.

Are there any native trees in your area that will make a good bow?  You should cut a few now so they can be seasoning while you work on those board bows.

I can't really see the face and edge grain which needs to be straight.

  The oak might be ok as is,basically, but look carefully.

The ash will probably need a ring chased.  If you have to you can chase on out backwards.

I think face of the wood at second picture is suitable for the back of the bow, first one maybe, but don't put back of the bow on the fifth picture face.
