Greenstone Ax

 I crunched out this greenstone ax from a local creek rock.
Thanks to the great members here, I may be on my way
to make some deer rawhide to bind it to a stick.

Cool.Nice score.I took mine and mounted it into the Y crotch of a stick.Wrapped it in thick rawhide to attach it and it works fine.I used to use it to hit my tipi stakes in at rendezvous's.

That looks great, I used one James Parker made at the Classic last  year to help rough out a stave, Worked fine. He had it polished and pretty dang sharp.

Don, all kidding aside  your axe looks real good and I'm sure I don't have the patience for all  that pecking and grinding. Caveman gave me some greenstone and some quartz to peck it with but I just can't seem to set and peck away at it.  I found a nice peck and ground adze this summer in a cornfield that I was short cutting across. Need to get in there this spring and look around. Bob

Zuma...Here's mine.Not very sharp and I hate to cut a tree down with it,but it did pound wooden stakes in nicely.Probably three different kinds of rawhide on there to secure it solid.Buffalo/Beef/and Deer.Sew it on wet.Stretched to its' limit and left to dry.

Scott Silsby let me photograph some of his.
I tried to watch him haft an ax at Oregon Ridge a few years ago.
Got distracted but learned a little. He lets the kids and adults
chop away all day long. Never saw one fail.

I have used a pruned cherry tree branch. I peeled the bark back
six or seven inches cut the branch (left enough branch for handle)
off and notched it to receive the ax groove. I then wrapped the bark
criss cross over the top of the ax and back down along the handle.
It was wet and supple (spring). I then wrapped the bark tight with
wet raw hide. It stayed solid until I gifted it. Looked great.
More of a tomahawk.

Bob, Yeah for sure a lot of work. Ask Pete Davis. He had rounded
third and was sliding in when his lopped on a final peck.
I thought you and Eddie were hilarious. You could use a dia. grinder
to preform? I'll post a couple I found that I modeled after.

Bead, That ax of yours looks like it was found in a cave. The real deal.

Don , at Letchworth this yr. had Larry Kinsella  sp. give some demo and talk on his many axes and told how many trees he cut up, can't remember exact numbers but very impressive results also Steve Nissely had some of his axes there and cut a lot of wood I was amazed at how well they worked. Bob

I like it Zuma as said by Ben that's one heck of a skull crusher there. Zuma I think you got the patience it might be the elbow grease that's running low, I'm sure that requires a massive amount.
