blunt tips vs. broadheads

Is there a target used for practicing the shooting with broadhead instead of field tips? I'm assuming that the trajectory is different, so, since the broadhead is used for hunting (which I do with rifle and want to change to bow) I want to learn said trajectory. I am new to archery...

I have made a couple bows, one hickory, one osage (broke a couple in the process, also), and have just practiced with field tips.

I shoot my steel broadheads into a pile of dirt to test them.Then resharpen them before the hunt.

Purchase a 4'X8' sheet of 2" or thicker styrofoam.  Cut it into 4 equal pieces.  Glue them together with liquid nails around the edges only.  If you use glue on the interior of the target the arrows will stick to the glue making them hard to remove.  Large blocks of styrofoam work great also if you can find them.  Easy removal of broadhead arrows with no damage to the head or the arrow.  Been using them for years to practice or make sure that arrows fly properly.  Works good for rock heads and tied on heads also.  Cheapest broadhead target I know of.

I shoot at a bale of hay.  Cheap and when too full of holes, into the garden it goes.

BTW, if your broadheads weigh the same as your target points they should fly the same.

Practicing with your hunting set-up is a good idea, however I haven't noticed a difference in trajectory between my fp and bh. Just keep your point weight the same. Wind planing isn't as big of an issue with slow, heavy arrows as it is with high speed wheelie bows. As for a target I would recommend straw, sand or dirt without rocks. I have a target that is ok for broadheads, but it really gets beat up fast. You can also stumpshoot with broadheads, but maybe only during legal season so no one thinks your poaching:)

If you have a place near you that sells supplies for boat docks, they have flotation foam blocks that are very thick(~12 inches).

I shoot mine into hay & re sharpen before hunting but once I know there all flying good I leave 2 of them dull so I can keep practiced between hunts

If the arrow is tuned well to the bow it shouldn't make much difference, I shoot field tips most of the time in practice, just use the same weight field point as the broad head you plan to use.

I would not hunt with a broadheaded arrow that I haven't shot...with the broadhead. I have seen differences in flight between broadheads and field points. I use a rubberized foam block to shoot into.

O I shoot mine Pat, just saying it usually don't make much difference in flight and trajectory if the arrow and weight is the same.

I shoot all of mine to, but every once in a while once will come off funny. Usually a 90 degree twist of the broad head and it comes around just nice. I have no idea why it works, but it has always worked for me.

I shoot each broad head arrows only once, maybe twice. That's it. So I shoot my Block target. No, broad heads aren't good for it. But only maybe 15-20 shots per fall is all it has to take.
