sleek i grew up shooting bolt action so that is my preference although a single shot is a good option mine is an older savage but like Clint said you can get a good deal on a remington or a Winchester
failure is an option, everyone fails, it's how you handle it that matters.

The options are almost limitless, if the budget is a prime consideration, go with a 20 gauge shotgun. It seems that single shot 20 gauge shotguns are pretty high these days but he'll never outgrow it. He likely wants a repeater, I know I did at that age. My first shotgun was a 15.00 (1960) single shot 12 gauge. From there to a double bbl 20 gauge and then 12 gauge pump. Still have them.

Look for youth model single shots, you can often get a new stock and bolt it on when he outgrows the youth model.

My wife and daughter shoots a 44 mag handy rifle. It kicks very little and shoots good.

243 single shot, I think fro American arms was Beau's first rifle, I cut the stock and added a good soft butt plate and he took several deer with it, it shot like a 22 only louder. ;)Several of the kid at the Club have used it over the years and always done a good job if they put the shot where they are suppose to. :) You can also change barrels very easy to most anything you want. I got a 20 gauge barrel for it also.

.243 for my 11 year old.  Accurate, not a lot of recoil.  Easy to shoot.

Gotta admit if your state allows it for deer .243 very versatile rifle. Not real fur friendly but really none of them are. Big enough for large game too and a common round. I like Pappy's choice

If you want to make a shooter out of him there is no better way than a single shot 20 gauge. That is what I started out with, You get good when you know you have to make that shot count!

Im torn between a 30 30 lever and the single shot 243 with interchangeable barrels.

2 Really good choices. I don't think you can go wrong with either.

My young grand kids hunt with 223's.  The youngest being 7 years old. One is a bolt action and the other is a Ruger #3 single shot. I reload their shells and they have killed everything they have hit with those guns.  I also have a 6MM which is close to a 243 or as Remington called it a 244. That gun has been used by the older grandson.  None of the guns I mentioned will kick the snot out of your son and he will enjoy shooting them.  Some of the guns mentioned above are a little stout for a young kid to use and shoot.  He gets kissed with the scope and he will or may get a little gun shy. Hard to cure trigger jerking.

Sleek the .243 doesn't kick as much as a .30 30

Sleek I bought Lucy a savage axis 243 she loves it. I think mossberg makes a youth 243 that comes with extra butt pieces so you can add them as they grow I bought the kids a 20ga like that.

I don't think my dad wasn't much for "growing into your gun" because I went straight from a single shot .410 to a Remington 30-06 when I was that age.

Felt like I was firing an anti-tank rifle, and probably explains why I passed up so many deer in my early hunting years : )

My Son just turned 13 and I bought him a Ruger American .243 with a Nikon Prostaff 3x9. It took 10 Rds to dial it in. Awesome setup!
