Is river cane or hill cane a viable option for arrow shaft material for someone beginning an interest in flight shooting?
Or would you recommend another readily available natural material?

For a long time my best practice arrow was a piece of river cane. I always regretted not taking it to the shoots with me. If you can find the right combination of weight, diameter and stiffness no reason it won't work.
