55" osage deer hide backed, FINISHED pic heavy
« on: March 20, 2016, 02:55:59 pm »
well I was gonna put like 10 coats of tung oil,, so it would look amazing,, well I got to 3 coats and here it is,,
50#@ 25 inches,,deer hide backed, bow is about 1 3/4 at the widest,, I was planning to go to 27 and that is why I went a little wide,,, but is shoots nice here so I stopped,,my options are open, I could pull it further I think since it is wide,, the wood was just so pretty I took alot of pics,, the handle is from the same deer,, I went a little crazy with that,, but had fun,, and it shoots great for me,, :) I had intended it to bend just slightly in the handle to handle the longer draw, not sure if it does but it is close,,  I felt like the deer hide made a nice camo :),, I have never had one stay so gray in color,, but am very pleased with the contrast to the osage wood,,I just love the color when you put a finish on, after 30 years of making bows I am still amazed how beautiful it is,,

the side profile is just after the rawhide was applied and dry ,,, so the bow had rested a few days,, after shooting and tillering a bit,, it shows a little string follow,, but acceptable amount for sure,, seems to have nice cast,, I think average for a shorter bow,, have not shot it through the chrono yet,,

brace profile looks ok, one limb has reflex and the other not,, but still pretty even,, when you shoot it ,, it just feels smooth so I am happy with that,,, I plan to shoot is alot and see if it needs tweeking ,, the tung oil finish is nice and easy to re apply if you need to work on a bow at a later time,,

If that don't shoot good, there is no such thing as a bow!
Guns have triggers. Bicycles have wheels. Trees and bows have wooden limbs.

Nice bow. I like the backing and handle made out of the same hide.

Looks nice Brad. Does that raw hide have Hair on it? I made my daughter a bow and backed it with tanned deer hide with hair. Turned out nice

The ancient Britons used to paint themselves in Woad dye which for ceremonies was Blue. But for hunting and warfare they mixed it with bear fat and ash and it was a perfect grey camo. That's what I thought  about when I saw the back and handle of your bow- whispering death! !
The contrast is fantastic and the bend is great too!  :D

Looks like a good one Brad. I like the style, shorter bow with wide/near willow leaf shaped limbs. To me the shape is kinda a cross between a west coast paddle bow and a Ishi bow. I like it, bend looks good and its not so dainty that it won't give you years of service.
I ain't broke but I'm badly bent.
