I sketched out a design for a haversack and started the hunt for some raw materials.

I make my living painting murals and signs. When I really want to give an impressive gift that I know will be appreciated I paint a portrait for someone. After a little internet detective work, I found a suitable subject for a portrait to gift to my guy. I obviously can't post pics of the work in progress or risk ruining the surprise.

I will post this one though just to give you an idea of what I plan to do. This is my buddy Tony. He lost his battle with cancer early this spring. We'd been close friends since grade school. You will be missed my friend.


I'll probably include some of the natural harvest items I'm gathering now. It was a good year for apples here. I doubt the hard cider will be ready by then, but you never know. The pie filling and sauce are already finished. Gonna run the cider press next week.

 Drawing/ painting was always something I enjoyed doing so I did it often. 25 years of practice goes a long way, just like playing the guitar, or archery for that matter. The more you do it the better you get.  Learning to see the world as layers of colored shapes helps just as much, I have a couple years at an art school to thank for that one.

I'm not posting any pics yet. I haven't decided whether to make a bow, a dz arrows, a plains style quiver, a bow, or an osage stave with enough sinew to back it. Kinda waiting for my guy ti post his requests.

As I may be changing plans I think I may as well say what I have been trying. For the centerpiece I was/am giving it a go to make a bark quiver, and then a number of starting material type things. I debarked mulberry for the first time not too long ago and was impressed with how easy that was, but debarking the tube as a single piece is a bit more of a challenge. I may have to alter plans some if that doesn't work out soon-any suggestions? I have pounded it half gently with a rubber mallet. I was also wondering about steaming or heating the section I want to remove. Again, any tips/tricks would be appreciated.

My main plan is a quiver of either woven cattail or fur of some sort, probably raccoon. Who knows what other ideas I'll have along the way. I've got the cattail leaves harvested and dried, now I just gotta find a day to try my hand at weaving them.

Really haven't started yet but just finished up something that could be the prototype, plus some skins and some bees wax that i use, good raw sticky wax that still has a hint of honey in it
