Cattail Basket Quiver
« on: February 13, 2015, 02:28:29 pm »
Hello all,
I'm new to the forum, but have been consulting it for years (thanks!). I did a quick search and didn't see any posts for basket quivers made from cattail, so here are a few pics of mine. Both the ribs and weavers are made from the cattail stalk, not the leaves. For the weavers, I split the stalks open with a knife and scraped out the pith. Each stalk produces two weavers, of approx. 4-5 feet. The rim of the basket is reinforced with a blackberry bramble, which is lashed on with thin spruce roots. The carry strap is made of braided spruce roots, which isn't the most comfortable, as it's fairly stiff. I later swapped that strap for one of simple 2-ply basswood bark cordage, which is much more flexible. Many hours involved in making this, though it was fun and free.

Very nice. I haven't seen a cattail quiver on PA before. Cattail is a survivors best friend. You could making a living with just it for food, shelter, clothing and accessories.  8)  The Cherokee would use split blackberry canes for baskets as well as river cane.

That is a very cool looking quiver, never thought of cattails. Now you need to put some different arrows in it and make a bow for it, too.

If you have to pull the trigger, is it really archery?
