Curly osage bow finished
« on: February 05, 2015, 01:03:43 pm »
Its finished all right  :'(   I started this bow at last years Tennessee Classic.  The bow felt wet and spongy when I got it bending.  It was also very heavy and still had a lot of thickness.  Looking at the dimensions of it you would think it was a 70 lb bow but it was only 40-45 lbs.  I brought it home and put it in my hot box for a while.  I added some reflex to it and then put it aside until today.  I strung it up and checked the weight on my scale, 45@20".  But as I was checking the weight I heard a tic.  I pulled it back a little by hand and heard more than just a tic.  I shut my eyes and yanked it back to full draw.  There was a bang and the lower limb hit me in the chest.  This is the first bow that I've broke.  Oh well.  I didn't have much confidence in this bow anyway.  I think the curly grain is junk for making self bows.  Its a shame.  It would have looked amazing sanded smooth and a glossy finish put on it.

I started out with nothin' and I still got most of it left

Is that a tension failure? I always wonder when I try to tell the difference between compression and tension failures

It could still make a good bow rack...but it doesn't look like it had any plans to be a bow.

I'm pretty sure it is a tension failure Chadwick.

It's going to be turned into knife handles Timbo.

It would have looked nice under clear glass... and survived.

That curly grain would have looked sharp. Good clean break (whatever that may mean :) ).

You just need to slow down, you can rush curly osage and expect a bow from it. Did you rub its belly every day for a few minutes prior to working it? It helps.

That was definitely a tension failure. Too bad, Clint.  :(

I've been told that if you take it to bed and whisper to it in the dark that they tend to stiffen up. >:D

Bummer about your bow Clint.  The commentary on this thread does have me snickering a bit, but bummer on the bow. >:D. Josh
